The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel: New festival embraces river’s transformation

It’s too bad the Colorado River is looking so low as organizers promote the inaugural Colorado Riverfest to celebrate its importance to our community and support the organizations that protect, rehab and develop the two rivers whose convergence gave Grand Junction both a name and an identity.

The flows may be anemic, but the banks of the Colorado are looking better than ever. Gone are the mill tailings and junkyards that for too long defined Grand Junction’s riverfront. From eyesore to one of the valley’s greatest assets, the new riverfront has been decades in the making and it’s fitting to have a festival celebrating the transformation.

The first Colorado Riverfest will take place on July 21 at the Las Colonias amphitheater with related activities throughout the park and Watson Island areas. There’s a music lineup headlined by Grammy-nominated reggae artists Common Kings. But it’s not just a music festival. Activities are as multifaceted as the riverfront itself.
