Mitt Romney plans May fundraiser for his nephew, gubernatorial candidate Robinson

Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney will be in Colorado on May 8 for a fundraiser for GOP gubernatorial candidate Doug Robinson, his nephew, at a Cherry Hills Village home, according to an invitation to the event obtained by Colorado Politics.

The evening kicks off with an exclusive 6 p.m. reception that includes a photo opportunity with Romney, a candidate for the U.S. Senate in neighboring Utah and a former Massachusetts governor. A general reception follows at 6:30 p.m. Admission to the fundraiser starts at $500, with the VIP reception costing $1,150 per person or $2,300 per couple.

It’s at the home of Bruce and Debbie Payne. He’s the president, co-founder and chief financial officer of the Denver-based natural gas company Laramie Energy II and a former managing director of Chase Manhattan Bank in London.

The Paynes welcomed Romney for a fundraiser during his presidential campaign in 2011.

An invitation to the Robinson event lists more than 50 members of the host committee.

According to a source with the Robinson campaign, the fundraiser had been scheduled pending final confirmation, and the date could change.

Robinson, a retired investment banker, hasn’t officially made the June 26 primary ballot, based on a ruling issued Friday by the Colorado Secretary of State’s office that he came up 22 signatures short on his nominating petitions. But a spokeswoman for Robinson’s campaign said the candidate anticipates asking a judge to correct the shortfall this week.

The other Republicans running for the office held by term-limited Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper are State Treasurer Walker Stapleton, former Parker Mayor Greg Lopez and entrepreneur and former state lawmaker Victor Mitchell.
