Alan Kennedy-Shaffer made it onto a crowded Democratic primary ballot in Denver’s Senate District 34 Friday with just three valid petition signatures to spare, the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office said Friday.

Milo Schwab cleared the required 1,000 signatures on April 10 and Julie Gonzales made it onto the Democratic ballot on March 23. Jonah Weiss is still waiting on his petition signatures to be validated.

They are running for the seat held by Sen. Lucia Guzman, who is term-limited. She has endorsed Gonzales.

Kennedy-Shaffer submitted 1,405 signatures from registered Democrats, but 402 were deemed to be duplicates from other petitions, people who did not live in the district or people not registered to vote.

Kennedy-Shaffer is a teacher, civil rights lawyer and captain in the Colorado Army National Guard.

“I appreciate everyone’s support for our campaign for justice for all, education for all, and healthcare for all,” he said in a statement Saturday. “Now we need to work together to win the primary on June 26.”

He said U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii will campaign with him in Denver on April 28, thanks to Progressive Democrats of America, which endorsed Kennedy-Shaffer. They will be together at the Earth Day event at the Lowry Conference Center, including a 4 p.m. reception and a rally at 5:30 p.m.

“We need progressive leaders who will push for 100% renewable energy, economic justice, strong public schools and universal healthcare,” he stated. “I am honored that Tulsi, a progressive champion who was a surrogate for Sen. Bernie Sanders, will be joining progressive Democrats in Denver on April 28.”
