Denver ranks ninth among cities in the country for generating solar power, according to an annual report from the Environment Colorado Research & Policy Center.

Each year, the organization ranks nearly 70 major cities by megawatts of solar energy

The cities are ranked by those that have the most solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity installed.

“Cities like Denver are leading the way to a future powered by clean, renewable energy,” Garrett Garner-Wells, director of Environment Colorado Research & Policy Center, said in a statement. “By tapping into more of our vast solar energy potential, we can benefit from cleaner air and fight climate change.”

Last year, Denver ranked 12th.

While Denver ranked ninth at the end of the 2017, when the measurement was taken for the latest report, it has since increased its share of electricity from renewable sources, Environment Colorado noted.

“As a business owner, I’m focused on helping folks live healthier lives,” Anne-Worley Moelter, CEO and founder of Movement Climbing + Fitness, said in a statement provided by Environment Colorado.

“Solar is an integral part of our operations because it promotes cleaner, healthier air throughout our community.”

Movement Climbing + Fitness has solar panels atop its business in Denver’s Baker neighborhood, as well as the flagship facility that opened in Boulder in 2009.

The report, “Shining Cities 2018: How Smart Local Policies Are Expanding Solar Power in America,” found that while the top 20 cities made up about one-tenth of 1 percent of the country’s land mass, they generated represent 4 percent of U.S. solar capacity.

“We are in a moment when progress on renewable energy will come from cities across the country,” Garner-Wells continued. “More local leaders should step up and start plugging their communities into the clean and virtually limitless power of the sun.”
