Capitol M (March 2)

A lighter side, usually, at what goes on in the state Capitol. Given what’s gone on at the Capitol this week, a little lightness is definitely in order. Suggestions that a little harp music might improve attitudes in the House have already been made, but you’ll have to wait until Sine Die.

The things you learn from lawmakers…Rep. Lori Saine of Firestone knows what outer space smells like. And just why would she want to know that?

It happened by accident on a recent shopping trip. Saine had a new Google phone with her, and it misinterpreted a question she asked.

The answer: seared steak, according to Saine. And if you do a google search on “what does outer space” it autofills to “smell like” so apparently that’s a popular question to ask.

Our favorite Capital M…is Rep. Hugh McKean’s best friend, 7-year old Kolten, who’s holding the Capital M this week. Kolten visited the House during a tribute to those with intellectual and development disabilities and their families and caregivers. Kolten sat on McKean’s lap the day he was sworn into office last year.

At the well, McKean introduced Kolten to the House (and the state!) “I was asked a while ago what I do every day that involves someone with intellectual or development disabilities,” McKean told his House colleagues as he held a slightly fidgety Kolten in his arms. “I am the best friend to one of the most remarkable people I’ve ever known.”

There’s a lot to think about what we can do for people with intellectual disabilities, McKean said. “Most of it has to do with, ‘we’re seven.’ Not much has to do with what we can accomplish in life. This boy fills my heart.” And it showed, too.

Make it loud and proud! With St. Patrick’s Day just two weeks away, it’s time to get ready for pipes, harps (ahem) and all things Irish. Yes, bagpipes are an Irish instrument as well as a Scottish one; the Irish version is known as the Uilleann pipe. What you see most often in bands is the Scottish Great Highland pipes.

The bagpipe band of the Colorado Emerald Society is made up of firefighters, police and emergency service personnel of Irish ancestry. They showed up at the Senate and House Wednesday as part of the day’s beginning activities.

Capitol M has been an unabashed bagpipe fan for years, and has no fear of standing right next to bagpipes when they’re being played. The tune is Green Hills of Tyrol. Pipe Major is Steve Johnston of West Metro Fire; Drum Major (the guy with the big hat) is Steve Smith.

Rep. Hugh McKean with his best buddy, Kolten, during the 2018 session. Kolten was slated to lead the House in the Pledge of Allegiance in late March, but that didn’t happen when the House went on recess.
