State Rep. Faith Winter, D-Westminster, is one of six women nominated for a national award from EMILY’s List, an organization that supports pro-choice, Democratic women candidates, the group said Thursday.

The award, named for former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, honors state and local women elected officials with a commitment to community, women and families and, the organization said, the civility that has marked Giffords’ career.

“Faith has dedicated her career to taking action and driving change,” said EMILY’s List president Stephanie Schriock in a statement. “Throughout her career, she has championed efforts to protect families in her community and has inspired others to get involved. Her hard work and passion for her community have made Faith a successful voice for the working families of her district, and we at EMILY’s List are excited to nominate her for the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award.”

The public can vote online here to help determine the winner.

The announcement comes the same day House members are scheduled to begin considering a resolution to expel state Rep. Steve Lebsock, D-Thornton, who faces complaints filed by five women, including Winter, alleging sexual harassment or misconduct.

House Speaker Crisanta Duran, D-Denver, won the national award in 2016.

Winter is challenging state Sen. Beth Martinez Humenik, R-Thornton, in a crucial state Senate district that could determine which party controls the General Assembly’s upper chamber.

EMILY’s List has targeted the Republican’s single-seat majority in Colorado’s Senate this election, charging the GOP with “pushing a shameful agenda that turns back the clock on women’s rights.”

A former member of the Westminster City Council, Winter chairs the House Transportation and Energy Committee and is vice chair of the Business Affairs and Labor Committee and the House Select Committee on Climate Responsibility. She’s a former national field director for The White House Project and executive director of Emerge Colorado, two organizations that recruit and support women candidates. Winter and her husband, Mark, have two children.

The other nominees this year are Cook County State’s AttorneyKim Foxx of Chicago; Washington state Rep. Kristine Reeves; Tucson City Councilwoman Regina Romero; Missouri state Rep. Cora Faith Walker; and Boston City Councilwoman Michelle Wu.
