Rep. Doug Lamborn says Lt. Jim Downing’s life ‘painted a picture of Christ’s love’
U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn shared a video message Thursday afternoon from Washington, D.C., in tribute to Navy Lt. James “Jim” Downing of Colorado Springs, a Pearl Harbor survivor who died this week from complications from surgery. He was 104 years old.
Downing was the second-oldest man who survived the Japanese attack and the nation’s entry into World War II on Dec. 7, 1941.
He joined the Navy at 19 in 1932 and retired in 1956, joining the Navigators ministry, in which he stayed active the rest of his life.
In October the Interstate 25 bridge over Cimarron Street in Colorado Springs was renamed in Downing’s honor.
Downing is survived by six children and nine grandchildren. His wife, Morena, died in 2010 after 69 years of marriage.
Here’s is the text of Lamborn’s remarks:
On Tuesday a true American hero and a valued asset to our community, Jim Downing was promoted to glory. Jim’s courageous service in the Navy lasted 24 years, and included heroism at Pearl Harbor during that fateful attack in December 1941.
Jim also heroically dedicated his entire life to the advancement of the Gospel, continuing speaking engagements until his last days. His life painted a picture of Christ’s love, influencing countless lives, in particular through his worldwide ministry with The Navigators. Jim was a faithful Navigator for decades, directing the ministry’s international department and serving in several leadership roles. Jim wrote two books, Meditation and Living Legacy. Jim retired from full-time ministry in 1983, but continued to impact countless lives in our community until Tuesday. And actually, I’m confident that his impact will continue for coming generations.
I was honored to have known Jim. Indeed, it was a real blessing to be able to host him here at the United States Capitol last year.
Jim and his wife Morena were married for 68 years before her passing.
We’ve lost a loyal veteran, an inspired evangelist, a devoted family man and faithful disciple. While he will be deeply missed, we rejoice that he is now home with his Savior, reunited with Morena, and has heard those precious words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Jim fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. I thank God for the life and legacy of Jim Downing.
