The Pueblo Chieftain: Don’t enable opioid use

In legislator-speak, the term “enabling legislation” usually refers to a law that empowers an individual or group to take certain actions. However, a bill presented to the Colorado General Assembly could give added meaning to the term.

The General Assembly’s Interim Committee on Opioid and Other Substance Abuse has recommended a half-dozen bills aimed at tackling a problem that plagues Pueblo and other parts of our state. Some of the bills are good, some of them are questionable, but one seems like a particularly dangerous idea.

That bill would create a so-called “safe site” in Denver where heroin and other drug users could inject themselves under the supervision of trained medical personnel. The rationale behind the measure is that having medical personnel on hand would reduce the chances of someone dying from a drug overdose.
