A distinct honor for Wayne Williams: He’s an FOM (friend of Madison)

One of Colorado’s more promising young artists is a fifth-grader at Cherry Creek School District’s Black Forest Hills Elementary School, in Aurora. Madison Lee was in fact just a fourth-grader when she was named Colorado’s winner in the national Doodle4Google competition, in which youths from across the country vie annually to have a logo of their creation adorn the search behemoth’s homepage as the doodle of the day.
Lee’s connection to Colorado politics? She knows Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams. Or, more like, Williams knows her. After all, he had the distinct privilege of announcing Lee’s selection as Google’s best Colorado doodler last February during an assembly at her school. And this holiday season, Lee sent him a Christmas card displaying her artistry as well as some truffles (yeah, like he needs the truffles) as a reminder of their friendship. Recounts Williams’s spokeswoman-de-camp Lynne Bartels in her blog:
In addition to Madison, the Lee family sent a Christmas card to the secretary, thanking him for making the announcement at the school assembly. “It was an amazing, phenomenal moment for us and we appreciate your time,” the Lee family wrote.
“This is just incredible,” Williams said, as he read their cards and unwrapped a box of Lindt truffles. “I had the honor of recognizing Madison as the winner almost a year ago, in late February, and to get notes from the family about what it meant to them – and still means to them – is so touching.”
Now, that’s what you call a devoted fan base. At the grass-roots level. And to think Williams isn’t even running for higher office. Yet.
