‘Godspeed, rebels’: Democrat Gabriel McArthur withdraws from Colorado secretary of state race
Quoting from “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” self-described progressive Gabriel McArthur announced Thursday he’s dropping out of the Democratic primary for secretary of state but intends to keep pushing for change and promoting kindness in the world.
“Godspeed, rebels, I’m out,” wrote McArthur, a Bernie Sanders delegate to last year’s Democratic National Convention, in an online post that explained his decision and at the same time lobbed scathing critiques at the state of political institutions, the news media, the Democratic Party and some individual Democrats. (“I grew up believing Democrats were the heroes,” he wrote. “Now I see them as bumbling fools in the dark.”)
McArthur said he got in the statewide race to bring a progressive perspective to the office, adding, “I believed that my lack of experience and financial backing would be bolstered by my commitment to strengthening our democracy and combatting corruption. In the recent weeks, I have realized that while my heart was in the fight, I am simply not quite ready for a race of this importance.”
It’s the second time McArthur has withdrawn from a high-profile primary this year. In July, he left the field of Democrats hoping to challenge Republican incumbent Mike Coffman in the 6th Congressional District. McArthur endorsed clean energy expert Levi Tillemann while taking some swipes at another candidate in the race, attorney and Army veteran Jason Crow.
McArthur offered some parting shots for Crow in his exit message this week, calling him “a candidate whose entire platform is ‘I’m not Mike Coffman,'” and ripping the chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for getting involved in the primary.
While he declined to endorse either of the Democrats still running for secretary of state – attorney Jena Griswold and activist Phillip Villard – McArthur said he hopes one of them unseats Republican Wayne Williams,, who is seeking a second term.
