Cool weather, hot festival

One reason why hurricanes like Harvey and Irma cause so much damage is that people keep building and rebuilding in areas where floods are likely. They keep doing it, Matt Welch noted this week in the Los Angeles Times, because they are often being subsidized by the federal National Flood Insurance Program.

Rod Slyhoff, president and chief executive officer of the Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce, estimated that 105,000 to 115,000 people showed up for the three-day event over the weekend. That’s down a little from previous years, but the crowd size doesn’t reflect negatively on what has grown into a blockbuster celebration of the community’s most famous product.

Of course, the main focus of the festival is and always should be the food. It’s a great opportunity for local farmers to showcase the chiles and other produce they grow. But there also was so much else to see and do besides eat and shop at the seemingly endless lines of vendor booths.
