… on our prediction that they would dispatch a legislative proposal lowering the age of consent for child therapy from 15 to 12. It seems as if we made the prediction only one blog post ago. Hey, wait a minute; that’s exactly how long it has been.

We learned of the development Monday afternoon via press release from the very organization — conservative Colorado Family Action — we had anticipated would be in on the kill.

While the quick turnaround caught us off guard, the ultimate fate of House Bill 1320 never was in doubt. To recap: The Democratic-sponsored bill (authored by freshman Rep. Dafna Michaelson Jenet, D-Commerce City) passed the Democratic-majority state House last week over minority-Republican objections, with impassioned arguments on both sides. That made its doom today at the hands of Republicans on the Senate State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee — once the bill moved to the GOP-ruled upper chamber — all but inevitable.

Successful Day at the CO Capitol! HB17-1320, was stopped in the Senate State Affairs committee by a party-line vote of 3:2 today. This bill would have breached the most valuable relationship in a child’s life, that with their parents. HB17-1320 sought to allow and encourage minors as young as 12 years old to make critical decisions regarding their mental health care, without their parents knowledge or permission! Please thank State Senators who voted to stop this bill.

The Republican senators deemed thank-worthy — Owen Hill of Colorado Springs, Vicki Marble of Fort Collins and Jerry Sonnenberg of Sterling — were the same that another Colorado Family Action press release earlier in the day had urged recipients to call in opposition to the bill. Ask and ye shall receive.
