Colorado Springs Platte Floral owner dies days after hit by SUV driven by head of El Paso County GOP
Longtime Platte Floral owner Mel Tolbert, who was hit by a friend backing up in his car to enter a parking space last week, has died, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office said.
The Coroner’s Office said he died at 4:09 p.m. Sunday.
Just before 4 p.m. Sunday, a Memorial Hospital spokeswoman said Tolbert was in critical condition. By Sunday evening, the hospital no longer had information on his status.
El Paso County GOP Chairman and longtime local businessman Trevor Dierdorff, 45, was reportedly trying to back up to pull into a parking space on Tejon Street at 7:32 a.m. when he hit Tolbert, 79, who was crossing behind him, Colorado Springs police said.
Dierdorff was not arrested, and charges are not likely to follow, police Lt. Howard Black previously told The Gazette. “There’s nothing to suggest alcohol or drugs were involved,” he said.
