The Pueblo Chieftain editorial: Elected officials need to hold town hall meetings
“It is not the same thing to talk of bulls as to be in the bullring.”
The Spanish proverb applies to our conversation today, in which we argue that our Colorado representatives in Congress are making a mistake by not holding town hall meetings.
They and colleagues throughout the country no doubt have been intimidated by the many ugly town hall meetings in other parts of the country where representatives and senators – especially Republicans – have been hammered by protesters and citizens concerned about health care, immigration and all sorts of issues that have been inflamed ever since President Donald Trump’s first day in office.
Having watched these verbally violent meetings, we understand the hesitancy to call a public town hall meeting, then have to stand there and take perhaps hours of verbal abuse and name-calling. Still, while we can’t know what it’s like in the bullring, we think our GOP congressmen – Sen. Cory Gardner and 3rd District Rep. Scott Tipton – should hold town hall meetings as soon as possible.
