BARTELS: Colorado reporter Joe St. George once covered Tim Kaine
Reporter Joe St. George made sure that Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine did an in-studio interview when the Democrat came to Colorado in March to campaign for Hillary Clinton for president because, well, the journalist just knew.
Kaine was on President Obama’s short list in 2008 for vice president, and St. George was sure Kaine would be Clinton’s No. 1 choice, even with the senator’s reputation for being “boring.”
“In Virginia politics, it was expected this would happen,” said St. George.
He moved to Colorado from Virginia last December to cover politics for Fox 31 and Channel 2. He helped moderate a GOP U.S. Senate debate in May where candidate Jon Keyser’s Great Dane became a hot topic.
After Clinton tapped Kaine Friday to run with her on the Democratic ticket, St. George published a tweet about Kaine and Benghazi that made some Republicans laugh because the topic does drive Democrats nuts:
On Election Night in 2012, St. George covered Kaine, the former mayor of Richmond and governor of Virginia, who beat Republican George Allen in the U.S. Senate race.
“He was very accessible to cover, always willing to do an interview on any subject,” St. George recalled, adding it was common to show up at an event and find Kaine in blue jeans and a T-shirt. (Hmmm, what other politician do I know who dresses casually?)
St. George cobbled together his interview with Kaine in March with the news of his VP selection for a newscast that aired last Friday.
Kaine spoke Wednesday night at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. Political reporter extraordinaire Chris Cillizza from The Washington Post wasn’t impressed, saying the speech included a few “groan-worthy lines,” including a Donald Trump impersonation that should never be repeated. But St. George had a more positive assessment.
“I think America,” the journalist said, “just saw the suburban dad that Tim Kaine really is.”
