Bennet swamps GOP Senate hopefuls in pre-primary fundraising
THIS STORY HAS BEEN UPDATED
U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet raised $1.65 million – more than 10 times as much as any of the Republicans hoping to unseat him – in the most recent reporting period, pre-primary finance reports show, although GOP candidate Jack Graham wrote his campaign a check for $500,000, bringing his self-funding total to $1.5 million.
With $5.7 million in the bank, the Democrat had more than six times the cash on hand of the nearest Republican. Reports covered the second fundraising quarter up until the June 8 reporting deadline ahead of Colorado’s primary.
Five Republicans – businessmen Graham, Ryan Frazier and Robert Blaha, El Paso County Commissioner Darryl Glenn and former state Rep. Jon Keyser, R-Morrison – are on the June 28 primary ballot. Bennet is unopposed for the Democratic nomination.
Campaign finance reports for federal candidates running in Colorado’s primary were due last Thursday – pre-primary deadlines vary by state, depending primary dates – although reports filed by Senate candidates can take some time before appearing on the Federal Election Commission website.
Bennet headed the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee for the last cycle and is considered a fundraising powerhouse. Bennet has raised $11,115,090 so far for his reelection campaign, nearly as much as fellow U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner, a Yuma Republican, raised during his entire run two years ago, when he unseated Democratic incumbent Mark Udall.
On top of the $500,000 he loaned his campaign, Graham hauled in $123, 746 for the period and had $882,800 on hand, far ahead of any of his Republican rivals.
Keyser raised $112,695 and wrote a check for $50,000 – making for a total of $150,000 he’s loaned his campaign – and reported $173,484 on hand.
Glenn, who had trailed in fundraising in previous reports, picked up the pace significantly in the 2nd Quarter following his dominating win at the state assembly, when he kept nine other candidates from making the primary ballot. (The other four GOP hopefuls petitioned their way on.) He reported raising $108,599 and had $50,198 on hand.
Frazier brought in $57,500 and has loaned his campaign $148,440. He reported $19,850 in the bank.
Blaha’s campaign reported it had raised $125,088 and had $278,177 on hand. Earlier this year, he loaned $1 million to his own campaign.
