It’s been a prolific few days for House Republicans and we’re talking babies, not bills.

Rep. Kevin Priola of Henderson and his wife Michelle on Friday welcomed their fourth child, Cora Gabrielle, who weighed 8 pounds, 7 ounces. Two days earlier, Joel Malecka, the spokesman for the House GOP caucus, and his wife Amy welcomed Calvin Frederick, who weighed 6 pounds 11 ounces. It is their first child.

They are the latest in a spree of Colorado politicos announcing births in the last year. The next newborn to appear on this page likely will be Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams’ first grandchild, due at the end of the week.

Priola is the second Colorado politico to choose the name “Cora” for his daughter. In 2014, Democratic Congressman Jared Polis and his partner Marlon Reis announced a baby girl had joined their family. I promptly nicknamed her “Cora Request.” It’s a journalism thing, you know, the Colorado Open Records Act.

“I didn’t know that Congressman Polis had that name in his family,” Priola said today, when I asked about it. “Michelle and I heard of it five years ago and kept it in our back pocket in case we had another girl. We like unique names and we thought it fit nicely with our other children’s names.

“I’m starting to find out that Cora might be more popular going forward than we suspected. Cora was also common in the late 1800s.”

Cora Priola joins a brother, Turin, 13, and two sisters, Bremma, 10, and Mari, 5.

The lawmaker talked about his children’s names in an interview with The Denver Post in 2010, when his wife was pregnant with No. 3:

Q. You got the idea for naming your son when you were at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. How did that happen?A. We were at the closing ceremony and my wife was pregnant and Turino, Italy, was going to be the next venue. The city also is called Turin. But that’s not the only reason. Turin is kind of a play on Kevin, and we have an Italian last name.

Q. Are you going to name the new baby “Vancouver?”A. I actually did run that by my wife as a joke. But our daughter has an unusual name, too. I was looking over my wife’s shoulder at a baby name book and the name “Briana” was over the fold of the page. I misread it as “Bremma.” My wife liked it.
