Williams’ car crossed the centerline of a two-lane Texas highway into the path of a vehicle driven by Eric James Gomez. Despite evasive action taken by Gomez, the vehicles collided head-on. Gomez’ pregnant wife, Brianna, a passenger in the front seat, was flown to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, where she was pronounced dead early on Dec. 27. Her baby boy, delivered by c-section, survived. Eric Gomez and his two other children, Mali, age 6, and Eleri, age 4, also were injured in the accident but were treated and released a day later.

Williams had three passengers in her car: her son, Todd, 41, and his two sons, Tristan, 3, and Tyler, 7. None of the passengers were wearing seat belts; Todd and Tyler were both ejected in the accident and were hospitalized at Northwest Texas Hospital. All of the members of the Gomez family were wearing seat belts.

Williams, a strong proponent of using seat belts, issued a statement following the accident but has refused to speak publicly since then. She is term-limited after the 2012 legislative session.
