Lakewood providing free transportation for seniors, residents with disabilities

The city of Lakewood is now providing free transportation for residents 60 years old or older and residents with disabilities through its Lakewood Rides program.

Lakewood Rides provides qualifying residents with transportation to and from work, medical appointments, grocery stores, social visits and other personal needs.

“We are designed specifically to help our Lakewood residents who are 60 and older and those with disabilities of any age,” said Dawn Sluder, Lakewood transportation supervisor.

Residents are driven in buses equipped with a lift for all mobility devices. The buses are disinfected after each rider and face masks are required while onboard.

“It’s a door-through-door service so we will help you through the threshold of your door where we’re picking you up at, as well as the threshold of the door that you’re going to,” Sluder said.

While the Lakewood Rides program has been around for years, fares are currently suspended thanks to a 5310 grant and financial assistance from the Older Americans Act, the city announced Friday.

To use Lakewood Rides, residents can register online or by calling 303-987-4826.

The program also offers meal delivery for Lakewood residents 60 and older by calling 303-987-4833.
