Returning to the Denver City Council chambers this week is an ordinance that would update the city’s criminal code to align local penalties with state laws and recent Colorado Supreme Court rulings.

It primarily aims to reduce the maximum possible jail time and fines for lower-level, city-specific offenses. The code update was postponed during the June 1, 2026, regular council meeting. 

Also on this week’s agenda, council members will consider $18.75 million in potential spending for 25 individual contracts valued at $750,000 each for services including HVAC, plumbing, drain and sewer, concrete, electrical, gates and overhead doors, glass repair, roofing, fencing and painting.

Next on the agenda is a pair of lease agreements for city-run homeless shelters.

The first is a congregate men’s shelter at 4600 E. 48th Ave., under a lease with the Denver Rescue Mission, and the second is a non-congregate shelter at 4040 Quebec St., under a lease with Urban Alchemy.

Both leases run through the end of 2026 and cost the operators $30 annually.

There are two proclamations scheduled for presentation. The first, in the 3:30 p.m. session, recognizes the 52nd anniversary of Denver Pride. The proclamation is sponsored by Councilmembers Darrel Watson and Chris Hinds.

The second, slated for the 5:30 p.m. session, honors Denver’s Black Pride and is sponsored by Councilmembers Darrel Watson and Shontel Lewis.

The Denver City Council will hold three public hearings at the 5:30 p.m. session. One hearing to watch is for Council Bill 26-0742, which concerns a historic landmark designation for two downtown parking garages. The scheduled public hearings are as follows:

• Council Bill 26-0392: A bill for an ordinance changing the zoning classification for 5101-5115 N. Milwaukee St. in the Elyria-Swansea neighborhood
  
• Council Bill 26-0742: A bill for an ordinance designating 2100 California St. and 2101 Welton St. as structures for preservation
  
• Council Bill 26-0620: A bill for an ordinance designating 2329 N. Gaylord St. as a structure for preservation 

The Denver City Council’s regular meeting begins at 3:30 p.m. in the Cathy Reynolds City Council Chamber, with the general public comment session beginning at 5 p.m.
