Gov. Jared Polis declares emergency for northwest Colorado wildfire
As fire conditions in northwest Colorado approach near-record levels, Gov. Jared Polis on Sunday issued a disaster declaration to support emergency response efforts for the Elk Creek fire in Rio Blanco County, according to a news release.
The wildfire, burning on private- and state-owned lands, was about 100 acres as of Sunday morning, officials said.
The declaration allows the state to mobilize resources and personnel to support the interagency aviation and ground crews that have been battling the blaze since Saturday, the release stated.
A Type 3 incident management team, designed to focus a large number of resources toward an incident, has been mobilized to assume command of the fire, according to the release.
The weather forecast in Rio Blanco County calls for fire conditions throughout the coming week, with temperatures reaching the high 80s or low 90s and little to no precipitation, according to the National Weather Service.
