Four people killed, including officer, in Manhattan shooting with gunman dead
Four people, including an off-duty police officer, were fatally shot and one person was injured after a lone shooter opened fire in a midtown Manhattan skyscraper Monday evening, according to police.
Surveillance footage showed the gunman, armed with a rifle, walking into a skyscraper that houses the headquarters for Blackstone and the NFL. The suspect, identified as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, New York City Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch said before holding a press conference.
Police responded to the active shooter situation reported around 6:40 p.m. Monday, evacuating the building and issuing a shelter-in-place order for people nearby.
The off-duty NYPD officer, Didarul Islam, was working a security detail at the time of the shooting.
Tamura traveled across the country in his car from Nevada to New York before committing the shooting, Tisch said. A loaded revolver with ammunition was found in the vehicle. The commissioner noted the now-deceased suspect had a documented mental health history, although no details were provided on the suspect’s motive.
Tisch confirmed there is no longer an active threat to the public as the investigation remains ongoing.
“Our hearts break for the families and friends of the victims and pray for the swift and safe recovery of the injured,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said at the Monday evening press conference. “This horrific crime reminds us all how easy it is to gain access to a gun. Gun violence has scarred so many neighbors and ripped apart too many families across this entire country.”
Earlier, city and federal officials quickly responded to the news.
“New Yorkers: there is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now,” Adams posted on social media earlier. “Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street.” Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) also confirmed she had been briefed on the shooting.
President Donald Trump, who is on a trip to Scotland, reacted to the shooting Tuesday morning.
“I have been briefed on the tragic shooting that took place in Manhattan, a place that I know and love,” he wrote on Truth Social. “I trust our Law Enforcement Agencies to get to the bottom of why this crazed lunatic committed such a senseless act of violence. My heart is with the families of the four people who were killed, including the NYPD Officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice. God Bless the New York Police Department, and God Bless New York!”
In a video update, Adams said the police were conducting a thorough search on each floor of the 634-foot skyscraper. The mayor also said he would be visiting the hospital to speak with the victims’ families.
“FBI New York Field Office management personnel and agents are responding to provide support at the active crime scene in Manhattan,” FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said. Attorney General Pam Bondi added that a team from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York was on the scene to help.
New York Republican and Democratic lawmakers expressed their condolences to the victims and their families.
THREE PEOPLE DEAD AND MULTIPLE INJURED AFTER SHOOTING AT RENO CASINO
Meanwhile, one man and one woman were arrested near the scene Monday evening. The man reportedly said, “Free Palestine, I’m not the active shooter.” Police have not yet confirmed if the two people were involved in the shooting.
There was a separate shooting earlier Monday in Reno, Nevada, in which the suspect killed three people and injured at least three others. The shooter had no known connection to the victims, and his motive remains unknown at this time.
