Several members of Colorado Springs Fire Department were scheduled to leave for Texas Monday night to aid in rescue and recovery efforts after flash flooding killed more than 100 over the Fourth of July weekend.

Just after 3 p.m., the Colorado Task Force announced on social media it has been activated and will be sending 45 members to central Texas, five of which include Colorado Springs fire personnel. The news came only hours after an 11 a.m. announcement that the Fire Department had “been advised of a potential deployment.”

“The scale of this disaster continues to devastate. Precious lives lost. Homes destroyed. Entire communities are impacted,” the Fire Department wrote on social media. “To the families and communities grieving tremendous loss — we mourn with you. Disasters like this are a sobering reminder of how quickly things can change.”

According to Monday reporting from the Associated Press, the flash floods have killed at least 104 people, and an unknown number of others remain missing. The death toll includes a number of young girls attending a summer camp, Camp Mystic, along the Guadalupe River, outside of San Antonio. 

President Donald Trump approved a major disaster declaration in response to the flooding, a Sunday news release from the Federal Emergency Management Agency stated.

Officials with the Colorado Task Force say the team is awaiting further details related to where specifically they will be assisting and what their mission will be. According to previous social media posts, there are more than 200 members on the task force, and they rotate “on-call” status throughout the year to assist with disasters around the country.
