National campaign hits airwaves with TV ad urging Gabe Evans to defend clean energy tax credits
A multi-million-dollar advocacy campaign is targeting U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans this week with TV and digital ads urging the Colorado Republican to protect clean energy investments in his district as the House considers overhauling tax-credit and funding programs.
Launched Tuesday on broadcast, cable and online platforms, the 30-second spot featuring Evans is part of an eight-figure national campaign dubbed “Protect Our Jobs,” aimed at pressuring nearly a dozen House Republicans whose districts have a significant number of jobs devoted to wind, solar and other so-called green energy technologies.
Organizers told Colorado Politics that the ad targeting Evans is scheduled to run for a week on an ad buy of nearly $100,000.
Serving his first term, Evans represents one of only a handful of evenly divided, toss-up seats. The former state lawmaker was elected to the 8th Congressional District seat north of Denver last year by unseating Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo by fewer than 2,500 votes, nearly duplicating her own win two years earlier.
The ad leans on Evans’ often-declared support for an “all of the above” energy strategy, encompassing cleaner energy in addition to oil and gas production.
While Evans’ district is one of the top fossil-fuel producing districts in the country, the campaign’s organizers point to nearly 500 new jobs tied to battery manufacturing and solar panel storage that have been announced in the district since the adoption of energy tax credits authorized by the Democratic-sponsored Inflation Reduction Act.
“Here in Colorado, we produce our own energy, and that means over 60,000 local jobs for electricians, construction workers and on factory floors, because producing energy locally drives down our costs,” the ad’s narrator says. “Now some in Congress want to end these energy investments and let jobs like these go to China.”
As photos of Evans and his congressional office phone number appear on screen, the ad concludes: “Our congressman, Gabe Evans, can stop this from happening. Congressman Evans, when Washington tries to kill Colorado jobs, that’s where you need to draw the line.”
It’s a message Evans has already indicated he supports.
In March, Evans was one of 21 House Republicans who wrote a letter to House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith asking the tax-policy committee to avoid “disruptive changes to our nation’s energy tax structure” while preserving “current and future private sector investments.”
“Countless American companies are utilizing sector-wide energy tax credits — many of which have enjoyed broad support in Congress — to make major investments in domestic energy production and infrastructure for traditional and renewable energy sources alike,” the House Republicans wrote.
According to the Washington Post, other GOP lawmakers targeted by the group’s campaign include U.S. Reps. Tom Barrett of Michigan, Mike Carey of Ohio, Juan Ciscomani of Arizona, Elijah Crane of Arizona, John James of Michigan, Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania and Rudy Yakym of Indiana.
Organizers said the campaign also includes a broader ad running on national cable.
