Democrat Jena Griswold lands endorsements from Perlmutter, Peña in Colorado attorney general primary

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold on Friday announced dozens of new endorsements for her campaign in next year’s Democratic primary for attorney general, including former U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter and two former Denver mayors, Federico Peña and Michael Hancock.

Griswold is facing Boulder District Attorney Michael Dougherty and former state House Speaker Crisanta Duran in a growing primary field for the job held by term-limited Democratic Attorney General Phil Weiser, who is running for governor.

Other new supporters in Griswold’s column include former House Speaker Dickey Lee Hullinghorst, the Colorado State Conference of Electrical Workers and United Steelworkers Colorado local labor unions, and Dr. Warren Hern, who recently shuttered the Boulder Abortion Clinic, which specialized in late-term abortions, after operating for more than 50 years.

Griswold also released over 20 additional backers, including current and former state lawmakers, municipal officials, county commissioners and school board members.

“I’ve seen Jena Griswold stand up every day for Coloradans,” Perlmutter said in a statement released by Griswold’s campaign. “I know that when we elect her as attorney general, Colorado will have a strong leader who will protect our people, our environment and our freedoms.”

“I am proud to support Jena Griswold for attorney general. She’ll stand up to protect working people, consumers and our communities,” said Peña, who helmed the U.S. Departments of Transportation and Energy under President Bill Clinton after his terms as Denver mayor.

“In these unprecedented times, Colorado needs Jena Griswold as our next attorney general,” said Hullinghorst, adding: “She will defend us from Donald Trump’s overreach and ensure that Colorado remains a stronghold of democracy, freedom and prosperity.”

At least two more Democrats could enter next year’s primary for attorney general in coming weeks, including progressive lawyer and nonprofit head David Seligman and former Deputy Assistant U.S. Attorney General Hetal J. Doshi.

The Republican primary has yet to take shape, though GOP sources say potential candidates who could join political newcomer Connor Pennington include House Majority Leader Rose Pugliese and 4th Judicial District Attorney Michael Allen, both from Colorado Springs.
