Aurora City Council election update: 15 candidates in running, including 4 incumbents, for 5 open seats

Candidates are stacking up for five Aurora City Council seats that are up for election in November, with several incumbents in the running as well as campaigns from a former Aurora councilmember and a former mayoral candidate.

As of Tuesday, Aurora’s campaign finance system showed five candidates for Ward I, three candidates for Ward II, two candidates for Ward III and five candidates for two at-large seats.

The Aurora City Council is made up of a mayor and 10 councilmembers, with six of them representing individual wards and four elected at-large to represent the entire city.

Councilmembers are part-time elected officials, while the mayor’s position is full-time. Aurora’s elections are non-partisan and the councilmembers serve staggered four-year terms.

Ward I

Currently, Councilmember Crystal Murillo holds the Ward I seat. She is serving her second term as a council member. She has not replied to The Denver Gazette’s inquiry into her future on the council.

Five candidates have filed campaign documents to run for Murillo’s seat, including Pastor Reid Hettich, product development manager and former Denver City Planner Stephen Elkins, State of Colorado Coordinator Gianina Horton, Christopher Belila and Leandra Steed.

Steed does not appear to have an active campaign website yet.

Hettich is the only candidate in the Ward I race who has raised money for his campaign, according to the campaign finance system. He has raised over $12,600.

Ward II

The Ward II council seat is currently held by Mayor Pro Tem Steve Sundberg, who is serving his first term on the council.

Three candidates are vying for Sundberg’s seat, including Sundberg himself, government security professional for United Launch Alliance Gayla Charrier, and United Healthcare Business Development Director Amy Wiles.

Charrier does not appear to have an active campaign website.

Sundberg is the only candidate to have raised money for his campaign as of Friday. He has raised almost $5,000, according to the campaign finance system.

Ward III

The Ward III council seat is held by Councilmember Ruben Medina, who is also serving his first term on the council and is running for re-election.

Two candidates, Medina and former Councilmember Marsha Berzins, are running for the seat.

Berzins has raised more than $6,000 for her campaign. Medina has not raised any money for his campaign, but only filed Thursday, according to the campaign finance system.

At-large

At-large positions are currently held by councilmembers Danielle Jurinsky, Alison Coombs, Curtis Gardner and Amsalu Kassaw — who replaced former member Dustin Zvonek late last year when Zvonek resigned. Kassaw is serving the remainder of Zvonek’s term.

Two at-large seats, held by Jurinsky and Kassaw, are up for election in November. Both have announced campaigns for re-election.

Former mayoral candidate and One Voice Coalition’s Rob Andrews, U.S. Postal Service clerk Aaron Futrell, and social worker Alli Jackson are also in the running for the two open seats.

Jurinsky is the only at-large candidate thus far who has raised money for her campaign. She has raised more than $3,600.
