Colorado Lt. Gov. Primavera signs building accessibility bill into law
As acting Governor, Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera on Tuesday signed a bill into law requiring local governments to implement building codes that meet or exceed the accessibility standards in international building codes.
“Every Coloradan deserves the freedom to live in spaces they can navigate and enjoy,” said Primavera. “By aligning our building codes with the current international accessibility standards, we’re not just meeting legal requirements — we’re reinforcing Colorado’s commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunity.”
“This bill is about eliminating barriers so that individuals with disabilities, including those aging into disabilities, can live in spaces designed for everyone no matter where in the state they choose to reside,” she said.
The bill also requires the Division of Fire Prevention and Control to ensure certain public school and health care centers adhere to the accessibility standards outlined in international building codes.
HB 1030 was sponsored by Reps. Junie Joseph, D-Denver, and Rebekah Stewart, D-Lakewood, and Sens. Lisa Cutter, D-Littleton, and Faith Winter, D-Westminster.
