Most agree: ‘Drain the swamp’

Forget what you are seeing on the nightly news. Ignore the whining about Elon Musk and his cuts under the Department of Government Efficiency.

Because amid all that noise, voters overwhelmingly agree it’s “time to drain the swamp in Washington, D.C.”

New polling shared with Secrets Friday from Rasmussen Reports found that 66% back President Donald Trump’s efforts to cut everything from jobs to buildings to regulations in the capital city.

Even Democrats agree that the cork has to be pulled, at 49% to 38% who don’t agree. For Republicans, 83% agree, and among independents, 68% agree.

Still, despite their support for one of Trump’s biggest campaign promises, the likely voters surveyed tempered their expectations. Just 40% thought that Trump would succeed in leaving town with a smaller “swamp,” while 32% thought it would be “bigger” and 17% “about the same.”

In his first term eight years ago, there were similar voter hopes that Trump would cut the government. But inexperience and a stubborn bureaucracy thwarted that effort.

This time seems different since he arrived as an experienced ex-president armed with a plan and a leader in Musk to tackle the swamp, though they have been bucked by federal judges.

Interestingly, likely voters also see Congress helping Trump with its support of draining the swamp. Rasmussen reported in its analysis that 47% believe that Capitol Hill supports Trump, while 37% don’t, an unusually favorable opinion of Congress by voters.
