Carter’s final trip to Washington, D.C., began with the departure of his casket from the Carter Center on Tuesday morning to the Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Georgia, where the casket will be flown to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. Carter’s casket is expected to arrive in the Washington, D.C., area at 2:15 p.m. EST, where the casket and his family will take a motorcade to the Navy Memorial.

At roughly 3:30 p.m., Carter will be transferred to a horse-drawn caisson and will be marched up to the Capitol down Pennsylvania Avenue. The procession will make its way to the Capitol at roughly 4:10 p.m. for Carter’s remains to be transferred into the building and to the Capitol rotunda.

At 4:30 p.m., Congress will hold a service paying their respects to the late president.

Public visitation period at Capitol rotunda

The public will be allowed to pay their respects as Carter lies in state from roughly 7:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Tuesday, along with all day Wednesday from 7 a.m. through 7 a.m. on Thursday, when the visitation period ends.

Those seeking to pay their respects may have to wait in a line, which Capitol Police warn could stretch outside the visitor center and outside. The line will open to the public at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

State funeral

Carter’s remains will leave the Capitol at 9 a.m. on Thursday, being sent to the National Cathedral at 10 a.m. for a funeral service. After the service ends, Carter will return to Georgia for a private funeral service at Maranatha Baptist Church later that day.

Carter’s funeral has caused several road closures and increased security throughout Washington, D.C., in between a pair of high-profile events, including President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20.

For the funeral, WMATA has closed the Archives-Navy Memorial metrorail station until 5 a.m. on Wednesday. Several roads around the route from the Navy Memorial to the Capitol are closed Tuesday. A full list of road closures and bus service adjustments can be found here.
