THE WAYFARING BAND
Denver
News: Its name would suggest that The Wayfaring Band is a musical group. But it’s not.
It’s a Denver-based nonprofit led by Kendall Hagar that helps adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities expand their skills and horizons by embarking on road trips and international travel.

On April 27, The Wayfaring Band will host the Rockabilly Roadhouse, a 1950s-themed fundraiser that begins at 5:30 p.m. at Forney Museum of Transportation, 4303 Brighton Blvd.
Tickets for this night of rock ‘n roll fun and nostalgia are $50 per adult, $10 per child and free for The Wayfaring Band members. They can be purchased by visiting thewayfaringband.com.
Guests are encouraged to dress in their rockabilly best: slicked-back hair, leather jackets and swinging skirts. There will be dancing to the classics and oldies, performances by champion swing and jive dancers and more.
The venue is wheelchair accessible, and the evening will be ASL-interpreted.
Catering by Design Cares, a program established by Catering by Design’s chief executive officer, Syd Sexton, will enhance the Rockabilly Roadhouse’s success. Each quarter, Catering by Design Cares “adopts” a nonprofit organization, donating food for its fundraising event and encouraging staff members to volunteer.
Catering by Design will furnish a Stomp Street Taco Bar and a Neato Sundae Bar for the Rockabilly Roadhouse.
Kendall Hagar expressed her gratitude by noting, “Syd’s kind gesture inspired even more support from Denver’s event community, including pro bono event design and planning by Ali Wilhelm of AW Events and photography by John Leyba.”
About the organization: The Wayfaring Band offers road trips, far-flung adventures, and a fellowship program for emerging social leaders who are adults experiencing intellectual and developmental disabilities. Participants practice independent living skills on the road and participate in a daily curriculum that addresses inclusion, accessibility, ableism, anti-racism, mutual aid, and more. Caregivers, students, teachers, professionals, activists, or interested community members are also welcome to join The Wayfaring Band on its tours to experience its culture of inclusion first-hand.
