Colorado House Republicans pick Ty Winter as assistant leader

House Republicans on Friday picked Rep. Ty Winter of Trinidad as the new assistant minority leader.

His election was uncontested.

The caucus picked Winter to replace Rep. Rose Pugliese of Colorado Springs, who was promoted to serve as the House minority leader earlier this week.

Pugliese was elected via secret ballot after days of chaos within the House GOP following the decision by Rep. Mike Lynch to resign from the position.

Pugliese stepped into the role after Lynch stepped down on Wednesday, a week after news broke that he had been arrested in late September 2022 for driving under the influence, speeding and being in possession of a firearm while intoxicated.

About six weeks after the arrest and following the unexpected death of House Minority Leader Hugh McKean, Lynch was elected minority leader. He did not disclose he had been arrested. He pleaded guilty a month later to lesser charges and was sentenced to 150 hours of community service and 15 months of probation.

The last several days have been chaotic, with Lynch’s critics attempting to force a vote of no confidence and remove him from his position.

After being selected to serve as assistant minority leader, Winter said, “I give you my promise that I will do the best that I can in this office.”

“I know that we have 19 different people here with 19 different sets of beliefs. My goal is to bridge that divide. We are going to sit down and we are going to figure things out,” he added.
