Don’t downplay the Boebert incident | Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

Once again Congresswoman Lauren Boebert is making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The Silt Republican’s decision to shift from reelection mode in the 3rd Congressional District to election mode for the 4th Congressional District sent political shock waves through the state.??

That decision and subsequent domino effect – which now includes a soon-to-be open seat in the 5th District – makes for fascinating political intrigue.??

But now Boebert has snagged more non-political headlines when she and her ex-husband were involved in an alleged domestic violence situation in a Silt restaurant.

??Details are sketchy but Jayson Boebert claimed that she punched him. He then called the police and filed a complaint. She denied in a statement that she struck him.??

Color us dubious on this one. She made similar denials about claims that she wasn’t vaping or recording or acting out at the Buell Theatre’s showing of Beetlejuice – until the surveillance video came out.

Fool us once, shame on you. Fool us twice…

We don’t want to make light of this situation. Divorce can be an extremely difficult process for couples, which normally should remain private even with elected officials; however, because this incident involved a public official in a public setting, it becomes a news story.??

As a possible act of domestic violence, regardless of its severity, it should not and cannot be taken lightly.??

Some may view this incident from a lighthearted perspective because Jayson is male and large while Lauren is female and tiny, which would devalue the overall domestic violence issue that has reached concerning levels in this country.??

The Silt Police Department has not been forthcoming with details of the incident, which remains under investigation.

This is frustrating viewed from a comparison perspective.

How would this incident have been handled if it were just regular folks? There should have been an automatic arrest if there was probable cause to believe an act of domestic violence was committed.

?This act apparently occurred in a busy restaurant. How hard can it be to find out what happened? At this moment, it appears that Silt law enforcement is not pursuing this possible domestic violence incident with the same vigor or the same process as it would involving a non-public official.??

The Boeberts are frequent fliers with area law enforcement, so there may be more to this story than meets the eye. But for law enforcement to remain tightlipped about the incident is frustrating.

??The public deserves to know that the incident was taken seriously and treated like any other accusation of domestic violence. There will be a report on why charges were filed or not filed.

?Boebert’s antics at the Buell Theatre have been extensively documented. In that incident she was quick to utter the now infamous line “Do you know who I am?

“??The Silt restaurant incident needs to be boiled down to the question, “How would this have been handled if it were a regular couple not in the spotlight?”

?The longer this investigation limps along without communication or resolution, the more it becomes subject to scrutiny.

?It’s a simple process for the small-town police. What happened and what happens next? Even if the Boeberts are not credible with local law enforcement, a room full of restaurant patrons ought to be.

?Congresswoman Boebert needs to be held to a higher level of accountability because of her elected status.

?At this moment, at least, it seems her elected status buys her a pass.
