Donald Trump dominates straw poll at Colorado GOP’s fundraising dinner; Kari Lake tops Veep vote
Former president Donald Trump carried the Republican primary straw poll by a wide margin at the Colorado GOP’s annual fundraising dinner on Saturday, party officials said.
Trump received 87% of the vote, with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis trailing at 8% in the non-scientific poll, conducted online using electronic balloting, Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dave Williams told Colorado Politics.
In the presidential poll, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy finished in third place with a little over 2% of the vote, followed by former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, who each received a single vote, for less than 1%. None of the other Republicans seeking the 2024 presidential nomination – including former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and North Dakota Gov. Doug Bergum – were listed on the ballot, Williams said.
The straw poll was held among donors to the state party’s annual Centennial Dinner in Loveland, which featured speeches by last year’s Arizona gubernatorial nominee Kari Lake and U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, the Rifle Republican seeking a third term next year in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District.
The state’s two other congressional Republicans, U.S. Reps. Doug Lamborn and Ken Buck, didn’t attend the dinner. Spokespeople for both told Colorado Politics they had conflicting commitments.
Lake dominated the straw poll’s vice presidential field, taking 50% of the vote, followed by Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders at just under 10%, Florida Rep. Byron Donalds at 8% and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Norm at 7%. Presidential hopefuls occupied the next two spots, with Ramaswamy receiving 6% and Haley at 5%.
Other potential vice presidential candidates who got votes included DeSantis, Scott, billionaire Elon Musk, former Vice President Mike Pence and Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn.
According to polling averages, Trump leading the presidential field by a wide margin both nationally and in key states about two months before early contests get underway in January.
DeSantis, Haley, Ramaswamy, Scott and Christie have qualified for the third GOP presidential debate set for Wednesday in Miami under the criteria established by the Republican National Committee, debate host NBC News reported late Monday. Trump plans to skip the debate, like he did in the first two.
Trump won Colorado’s 2020 presidential primary with 92% of the vote against nominal opposition. The state’s 2024 primary is set for March 5, known as Super Tuesday.
Williams said 153 of the sold-out dinner’s roughly 500 donors cast electronic ballots in the straw poll, using an electronic voting platform promoted by some Republicans as safe and secure.
Some donors didn’t want to vote online and preferred to cast paper ballots, Williams said, leading to lower participation. He added he was confident the results would have held if paper ballots had been used, considering the crowd turned out to hear Lake and Boebert.
