News: The Denver Scholarship Foundation’s 2023 Homecoming Gala might not have involved such traditional elements as a football game, marching band and crowning of a king and queen.
What the Oct. 20 event at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel did have is a $1.2 million profit – money that will be used for scholarships that will enable many more graduates of the Denver Public Schools to further their education at a community college, university or technical college in Colorado.
Erin and Andy Miller and Melanie and Blake Fulenwider were the Homecoming Gala chairs, and said they were honored to have had a part in the DSF’s “Sixteen-plus years of making college possible for so many.”
Andy Miller is the co-founder of Copley Equity Partners; Blake Fulenwider is vice president at L.C. Fulenwider, Inc.
Lorii (cq) Rabinowitz, the DSF’s chief executive officer, thanked the record 900 guests for supporting the work of the organization that was founded in 2006 with a $50 million challenge grant from philanthropists Tim and Bernadette Marquez. Tim, a Lincoln High School graduate who founded Venoco, Inc., and his wife were concerned about the number of Denver students who faced seemingly insurmountable challenges when it came to obtaining a post-secondary education.
Rabinowitz also relayed her deep appreciation to the Stead Family Foundation, which underwrote all costs of the Homecoming Gala. She also recognized the $100,000 Success Sponsors, Cydney and Tom Marsico and the Foxrock Foundation; the $50,000 Future Sponsors, Aimee and Jonathan Coleman, Eagle Pharmaceuticals and the Fulenwider organization; and the $25,000 Scholar Sponsors, Copley Equity Partners and the Bohemian Foundation.
VIP guests included Denver Public Schools Superintendent Alex Marrero; former U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter; Denver City Councilwoman Flor Alvidrez; and Luella Chavez D’Angelo, CEO of the International Center for Executive Options and chair of the DSF board.
About the organization: Denver Scholarship Foundation is a nationally recognized, evidence-based program whose three-part program of support systems, actionable tools and need-based scholarships help guide students in the Denver Public Schools to lifelong success. Since its start, the DSF has served some 9,000 students and awarded $65 million in scholarships to DPS graduates attending a community college, university or technical college in Colorado.
