Caraveo challenger Scott James raises $109K for 3rd quarter in Colorado’s 8th CD
Weld County Republican commissioner Scott James, one of Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo’s challengers in Colorado’s battleground 8th Congressional District, plans to report raising just over $109,000 in the third quarter, his campaign told Colorado Politics.
The Weld County commissioner and former county GOP chairman received contributions from 138 individual donors, including some big names in state Republican circles, a James campaign spokeswoman said. His campaign finished the fundraising period with more than $78,000 cash on hand.
Caraveo, a Thornton pediatrician and former state lawmaker, is seeking a second term representing the state’s newest congressional seat, which covers parts of Adams, Weld and Larimer counties north of the Denver metro area.
Labeled a toss-up by national election forecasters, the nearly evenly divided district has been targeted by both national parties and could determine which party holds the House majority after next year’s election.
Republican state Rep. Gabe Evans of Fort Lupton joined James in the district’s GOP primary in September.
Reports covering receipts and expenditures for the period from July 1 to Sept. 30 are due to the Federal Election Commission by midnight Sunday.
Neither Caraveo nor Evans had released their third quarter fundraising numbers by Friday afternoon. According to her most recent available filing, Caraveo raised just over $800,000 through June 30 and finished the second quarter with just over $625,000 on hand.
While his detailed report wasn’t available, James’ campaign said he raised $109,504 for the quarter – his first in the race – and spent $30,631. He had $78,873 in the bank. His totals don’t include any loans or self-funding, his campaign said.
Among James’ contributors were Peter Coors, the former chairman of MillerCoors; Tim Travis, owner of Eaton Metal Products; Grier Bailey, executive director of Colorado Wyoming Petroleum Marketers Association; Troy and Chad McWhinney, co-founders of McWhinney Real Estate Services; Luke Lind, owner of Lind Land and Livestock; and, former state Sen. Rob Woodward, R-Loveland.
“I’m truly humbled by the outpouring of support for my race for Colorado’s 8th Congressional District,” James said in a statement. “I am honored that so many trust me to carry our pragmatic, problem-solving, small town values to Washington. They are so badly needed at this critical moment in our country.”
