Veteran communications strategist Karen Crummy joins 76 Group, a Denver-based public affairs firm

Karen Crummy, a former investigative journalist and veteran communications consultant, is joining the Denver-based 76 Group public affairs firm as a partner.
She’s slated to start a new public relations division for the company, which has offices in Washington, D.C., California and Arizona, the firm said.
“Karen is an award-winning journalist, a gifted strategist, and the best crisis communications talent in the Western United States,” firm founder and principal Josh Penry, a former Republican leader of the Colorado state Senate, said in a statement. “We’re honored to have her as a partner at 76 Group and believe she will be a tremendous asset to our clients.”
The firm described Crummy, a former lawyer and longtime Denver Post reporter, as an expert at handling communications strategies for “complex, high-stakes and controversial projects often involving the intersection of business, public policy and law.”
A former spokeswoman for the oil and gas industry’s Coloradans for Responsible Energy Development, Crummy co-founded prominent Denver-based firm BluePrint Strategies.
Kate Roberts, a 76 Group principal, said Crummy has few peers when it comes to “both offensive and defensive strategic communications.”
“She knows the media and the key policy and business leaders, and she is skilled at working with a diverse client base to develop messaging and outreach strategies to meet our clients’ goals,” Roberts added.
A longtime unaffiliated voter, Crummy “adds political reach” to the predominantly Republican 76 Group and brings wide experience working on bipartisan causes and ballot measures, the firm said.
“It’s good to have some backup,” said Mike King, a Democrat and principal at the firm, who served as executive director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources under two Democratic governors.
“Balance is so important in a politically diverse state like Colorado,” King said. “It gives our clients a more comprehensive read on the issues and how to appropriately respond in different situations.”
While campaign management is only a portion of the firm’s activities, it has been involved in multiple high-profile campaigns in Colorado in recent cycles, including supporting successful statewide ballot measures to establish sports betting, raising the threshold to pass state constitutional amendments, reestablishing the state’s presidential primary and opening state primaries to unaffiliated voters. Last year, the firm helmed campaigns for statewide Republican nominees Joe O’Dea, Lang Sias and Pam Anderson, who ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate, state treasurer and secretary of state, respectively.
