One quarter of the public has received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, CDC says
One in 4 people has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the health organization reported that 83,930,495 people in the United States had received at least their first dose, amounting to 25.3% of the total population.
The organization also reported that 45,533,962 people had been fully vaccinated, or 13.7% of the population.
Nearly 70% of those aged 65 or older have had at least one dose, and 43.1% have been fully vaccinated. Just over 32% of those aged 18 or older in the U.S. have had at least one shot, and 17.6% of that population has been fully vaccinated. The CDC reported that, in total, over 128 million doses of the vaccine have been administered thus far.
Despite the rise in vaccinations, health experts are warning that the nation should still be careful, even after receiving the first dose.
“We want people to have a good time on spring break, but don’t put your guard down completely,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in an interview with CNN on March 10. “Just be prudent a bit longer. We are going in the right direction. We’re almost there.”
“I think for an older individual who is vulnerable to this virus, certainly … wait for a period of time after the second shot until you’re likely to have full protective immunity,” Dr. Scott Gottlieb, former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, told CNBC in January. “I don’t think people should feel completely secure after the first shot.”
As the supply of the vaccines increases, states are beginning to make more of their residents eligible to receive the shots. In an address to the nation on March 11, President Biden said that he had directed states to make the vaccine available to all adults by May 1.
Some states, including Mississippi and Alaska, already made vaccines available to all adults. On Tuesday, Texas announced that all adults in the state will be eligible starting March 29.

Biden added that if everyone did “their part,” the nation might be able to gather for in-person celebrations for July 4.
“It will make this Independence Day truly special – where we not only mark our independence as a nation but our independence from this virus,” he said.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the U.S. has reported just under 30 million cases of the coronavirus and over 543,000 deaths related to it, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University.
