Seventy to 80% of all ballots casted in Colorado are expected to be counted on Election Night.

In previous elections the state has been able to provide over 75% of the results on the night of an election, according to a media release. 

“In Colorado, county clerks process ballots prior to election day, which enables a high percentage of results to be reported on Election Night. But Election Night results are never final results,” said Colorado Secretary of State Jenna Griswold in a media release.

“In the days after Election Day, military and overseas voters return their ballots, signature discrepancies can be fixed, and a risk-limiting audit is conducted to determine statistical confidence in the results. Like any election, there is quite a bit of activity after Election Day.”

Opening reports will not be posted until after 7 p.m. on Tuesday. 

Individual counties are allowed to review signatures on ballots as soon as they are received, but could not begin scanning them until Oct. 19.

Griswold says expected high turnouts and unique circumstances surrounding this years election could impact the initial Election Night results. 

The biggest contributing factor in the results Griswold says, is the number of people who vote on Tuesday.

“The more ballots cast before Election Day, the faster ballots can be processed, and the higher percentage can be reported on Election Night,” the release read.

2,279,059 ballots had been returned to county clerks as of Thursday night, which is 79.8% of the total turnout for the 2016 election.

According to the release, results will periodically update throughout Election Night  on GoVoteColorado.gov.

Voters whose ballots were not approved will have eight days to fix any discrepancies.
