Coloradans sign up to be election judges in record numbers

More than 6,300 Coloradans have signed up to work the election — more than any other election in recorded state history, according to the Colorado Secretary of State’s office.

The increase shows an enthusiasm in the Nov. 3 election, Secretary of State Jena Griswold said in a statement. Earlier this year, the office launched an initiative to recruit for new election judges.

“Election judges play an important role in Colorado’s elections and have a front-row seat to the democratic process. As the youngest Secretary of State in the nation, I applaud every Coloradan, especially young people, for getting involved to help ensure Colorado’s elections remain the best in the nation,” Griswold said in a statement.

Many more Coloradans have signed up to work the election through county clerk offices.

In Jefferson County, nearly 3,000 people submitted applications to be an election judge, about five times the number of positions available, said George Stern, Jefferson County clerk and recorder.

Many of the applications were from residents getting involved in the election for the first time, Stern said.

Through a $1 million statewide grant program, the Secretary of State’s office helped increase pay for judges and counties can provide sick pay to judges to stay home if they are not feeling well, the office said in a release.

The office has also encouraged younger voters to get involved in the general election. Nearly a quarter of those who signed up to become an election judge through the Secretary of State’s office are 35 years old or younger, according to the release.

Those interested becoming an election judge can contact their county clerk to determine if there is still a need.

Residents can also sign up with the Secretary of State’s office and the application will be forwarded to the appropriate clerk.
