One Colorado mountain county is cracking down on mask enforcement, threatening the shutdown of businesses and criminal charges for violators.

Mountain-towners of San Miguel County, home to Telluride, have been called on to follow Colorado’s statewide mask mandate to prevent the further spread of COVID-19. 

The San Miguel Sheriff’s Office took to Twitter on Friday warning, “No shirt, no shoes, no mask, no service. The mandate is simple, but if you make it difficult, you may be asked to leave, & if you continue to be belligerent, you will be visited by one of us or our officers, & may be charged w[ith] trespassing or other charges.”

The statewide mask mandate, which requires masks to be worn when entering or moving within any public indoor space, went into effect at midnight on Thursday, July 16.

Town businesses were also ordered, “to follow the mandate or face risk of being shut down via county protocols.”

While the mountainous state is reopening under new COVID-19 rules, the virus is continuing to spread with 42,980 total cases confirmed Friday in the state’s latest updated from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. 

The tweet from the sheriff’s office goes on to add, “We’re in an emergency situation, please be a team-member and wear a mask.”
