State Rep. Jeni Arndt endorses Pete Buttigieg in Colorado’s presidential primary
Calling the young former mayor the uniter the country needs, state Rep. Jeni Arndt endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg on Saturday, ahead of his town hall rally in Denver.
Wheat Ridge City Council member Rachel Hultin, former Golden Mayor Marjorie Sloan and entrepreneur Aaron Bailey also threw their support behind Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and the current leader in delegates after the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary.
“Our country is at a make or break moment. While we’re facing daunting challenges like climate change and rising health care costs, Washington remains bitterly divided,” said Arndt, a Fort Collins Democrat, in a statement.
“Pete is the leader we need to unite our country, while also addressing these issues head on. He is the candidate that is best prepared to go toe to toe and defeat Donald Trump.”
Sloan said she decided to endorse Buttigieg after serving on a national mayors’ group with him.
“In person, he is exactly what he appears to be – thoughtful, intelligent, caring, and hardworking. He will restore our country’s hope and integrity,” she said.
Said Hultin: “In addition to impeccable values and ethics, Pete is the most qualified candidate and is clearly ready to rebuild our broken democracy.”
Arndt is slated to speak at the town hall Buttigieg is holding Saturday night in Denver, which happens after the results of the Nevada are expected to be announced.
The Buttigieg town hall is at 9:30 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Denver Airport Convention Center, 15500 E 40th Ave., in Denver. Doors open at 8:30 p.m., and those attending can RSVP here.
It will be Buttigieg’s second visit to Colorado this year. He filled a concert venue in Denver in January for a small-dollar fundraiser. His husband, former middle school teacher Chasten Buttigieg, met with supporters and attended a fundraiser in Denver last weekend.
Coloradans are returning ballots for the March 3 presidential primary, which falls this year on Super Tuesday, the same day 14 other states and territories’ votes are counted.
In an effort to build on Buttigieg’s momentum following strong showings in the first two nominating contests, his campaign added staff in Colorado this week to bolster a volunteer-led effort that has been organizing supporters since last spring.
Colorado has been host this week to most of the leading Democratic presidential candidates on the ballot, including a rallies and town halls held by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard.
Former Vice President Joe Biden attended a private fundraiser earlier this week, and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren has scheduled a rally on Sunday in Denver.
Billionaires Mike Bloomberg and Tom Steyer are the only Democrats who haven’t yet announced plans to campaign in Colorado before ballots are due. Both have visited the state in recent months.
President Donald Trump, who doesn’t face significant opposition in the Republican primary, held a “Make America Great” rally in Colorado Springs on Thursday.
