Colorado businesses moved a step closer to paying taxes online by hiring vendors to create the website, the coalition behind the effort said Friday.

The Simplify Coalition Sales Tax coalition applauded the Department of Revenue’s decision to hire Durango-based MUNIRevs and Oregon-based Transactions Tax Resources.

“We appreciate the work that DOR has put into making this goal a reality,” Simplify Coalition chair Dave Davia, who is the vice president and CEO of the Colorado Association of Mechanical and Plumbing Contractors, said in a statement. “We appreciate the work of lawmakers and opportunity to participate in the conversation and take an active role in the selection process.”

This system is expected to be online by June 1, the product of last year’s Senate Bill 6, sponsored by Sen. Angela Williams, D-Denver, with Reps. Tracy Kraft-Tharp, D-Arvada, and Kevin VanWinkle, R-Highlands Ranch. The bill provided $10 million to the state Office of Information Technology this year and $8.75 million next year.

“The coalition to simplify Colorado Sales tax was formed to support Colorado’s economy by simplifying the state’s overly complex sales and use tax system,” Davia said Friday. “We still have work to do to simplify Colorado’s complex sales and use tax system, but this is a big step toward making Colorado a friendlier place to do business.”
