The Pueblo Chieftain: Passenger rail’s bumpy ride

Among the hallowed halls of Colorado state government, few people have more power than KC Becker, speaker of the House of Representatives. Becker’s leadership position makes it easy for her to bring political causes she favors to the political forefront — and squash ideas that she doesn’t like.

So we were a bit alarmed when the Boulder Democrat made some comments right before the start of this year’s legislative session which suggested that she wasn’t completely on board with the idea of extending passenger rail service along the Front Range.

Specifically, Becker seemed upset that passenger rail service between Boulder and Denver planned under a separate initiative called FasTracks hasn’t happened yet, despite being on the drawing board for years.

In a conference call with our editorial board, Becker said FasTracks had “oversold and under-delivered” on its promises, which led her to question the wisdom of supporting the project that would provide passenger rail links between Pueblo, Denver and Fort Collins.
