Denver sheriff runs greeting card contest for inmates
The Denver Sheriff Department on Monday announced that its Inmate Programs Unit generated 47 entries in a holiday greeting card contest, from which department staff voted on the winners.
Top card designs will be printed and distributed to the inmates for them to share with their families.
The unit offers programming based on the educational, emotional, mental and spiritual needs of inmates. DSD noted that coloring has been successful at “reducing mental and emotional stress.”
Other rehabilitation-oriented programs focus on healthy living and job readiness, as well as peer-led substance abuse recovery. Yoga is available for the male and female populations as well as “Project Bedtime Story,” in which inmates can voice record a story for children to hear.
In Colorado’s state prisons, the University of Denver provides workshops on topics ranging from playwriting and ensemble theater to arts and spirituality. They also collaborate with the Department of Corrections on “With(in),” a podcast where the hosts, producers and staff are incarcerated.
CPR reported in September that the executive director of the DOC, among other staff, has been interviewed on the program.
