What they’re saying: Articles of impeachment

On Tuesday, Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives announced two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, stating that he abused the power of his office and obstructed Congress’s investigation into Trump’s attempted enticement of Ukraine to affect the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.

The House resolution announcing the charges followed weeks of hearings in first the Intelligence and then the Judiciary committees, featuring employees of the executive branch and scholars with knowledge of the impeachment process.

Here is how various political leaders within Colorado responded to the announcement:

“Public office is a public trust. And those who violate that trust must be held accountable. President Trump has abused his power, put our national security at risk and blocked Congress’s attempt to investigate. No one in this country is above the law, not even the president.” -U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette in a tweet

“House Democrats proved this morning that they have no respect for the voters they represent and are willing to override the will of the American people for their own political gain.” -Colorado Republican National Committee spokesperson Kyle Kohli in a statement

“We have to follow due process and the rule of law, but if the evidence of the President’s wrongdoing and abuse of power continues to remain consistent with what we’ve seen, it’s likely I will vote to impeach.” -U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet in a tweet

“Americans should take no joy in #impeachment. But we should demand justice-and that’s what the House is delivering. Sad to see the GOP abandon its Constitutional responsibility and swear allegiance to the President instead. Will any Republican in Congress put country over party?” -Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Andrew Romanoff in a tweet

“I plan to vote NO on impeachment. I’ve reviewed the facts and this is just more of the same baseless allegations by the left, which has been pushing for impeachment since November 9, 2016. Time for the sham to end!” -U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton in a tweet

“The weather outside is frightful

But impeachment is so delightful

And since he used quid pro quo

He’s got to go, got to go, got to go!

#HappyImpeachment” -Denver school board member Tay Anderson in a tweet

Colorado Springs is home to new Space Force under congressional deal

In what is seen as a major accomplishment for a bitterly divided Congress, America’s Space Force will call Colorado Springs home thanks to a defense policy bill that lavishes construction cash on the Pikes Peak region and gives troops here bigger paychecks. The bill redesignates Air Force Space Command in Colorado Springs as the Space […]
