Colorado is the “obvious choice” for the U.S. Space Command, according to Colorado’s U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet.

Temporary quarters were set up in Colorado Springs last month, headed by Peterson Air Force Base Gen. Jay Raymond. 

President Donald Trump has emphasized the need for the command amid threats to American satellites from other nations including China and Russia.

The Department of Defense will now decide where to permanently set up the center. In an op-ed for the Colorado Sun, Bennet wrote that the search should be kept within Colorado, a state that’s home to more than 50,000 aerospace jobs, more than anywhere else in America.

The aerospace field contributes more than $3.5 billion to the state’s economy, Bennet noted in the column.

“As the epicenter of national security space, Colorado is the clear option,” Bennet wrote. “No other state offers our combination of thriving military and intelligence assets, a robust aerospace industry and a supportive community focused on providing a good quality of life.”
