Gov. Jared Polis called a sufficient blood supply a “public health issue” and proclaimed Sept. 5 to be Colorado’s Blood Donation Day in a news release Wednesday.

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion, the news release said.

Although about 38% of Americans are eligible to donate blood, only 10% do, and Coloradans are encouraged to help change this.

“(T)he State of Colorado is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our state,” Polis’ proclamation reads. “Colorado Blood Donation Day effectively serves to remind us that we need to constantly replenish our blood supply through donation and community awareness.”

Polis’ proclamation recognized Vitalant, a Colorado community blood service provider that is second largest in the nation.

“Coming out of the last of the summer holidays, it’s especially important to give blood and replenish the supply to meet daily patient needs and to be ready for unexpected events,” said Charlie Propernick, Vitalant senior director of donor recruitment. “Blood donations don’t just sit on a shelf indefinitely; often they’re sent to hospitals within just a few days.”

Those who are eligible can donate at least three times a year and can visit a blood bank seven days a week, reports Vitalant.
