Hickenlooper’s Senate announcement yields mixed reactions
Former Governor and Democrat John Hickenlooper announced Wednesday that he will be running for Senate against Republican Sen. Cory Gardner.
Presidential candidates Michael Bennet and Kamala Harris were quick to offer their support.
Many of the early reactions on Twitter Thursday morning were praise for the decision, which is unsurprising given how many Twitter users called for him to run for senate after he dropped out of the presidential race.
Several users were quick to point out that the seat against Gardner is an important one for Democrats, and that Hickenlooper has a good shot at the seat if he wins the nomination.
But the road to the nomination is crowded.
Some initially criticized Hickenlooper’s decision, primarily focusing on Hickenlooper’s comments about a potential Senate bid during his presidential run.
“Being a U.S. senator for Colorado is not a consolation prize,” said Senate Leadership Fund Communications Director Jack Pandol in a release. “We agree with John Hickenlooper he is ‘not cut out to be a Senator,’ and we intend to litigate his very long and liberal record as a career politician to ensure Coloradans understand why.”
The Colorado chapter of the Republican National Committee said in a release that Hickenlooper brings too much “baggage” from his presidential race.
“For months John Hickenlooper told anyone who would listen that he would not make a good Senator, said CO RNC spokesperson Kyle Kohli. “We could not agree more.”
