U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Colorado Springs, picked up a third-party challenger Monday as Rebecca Keltie announced she would run as a United Party candidate.

A Navy veteran, Keltie is the Unity Party of America’s first female candidate, the party said in an announcement.

“I’d like to welcome Becca to the fight for the return of common sense to this country,” Unity Party of America national chairman Bill Hammons, who ran for Colorado governor last year, said in the statement.

“She’s already receiving Unity Party support at the state and national level, and I look forward to the official nomination of a Unity Party candidate for the CD-5 district at the next state convention in April, so that southern Colorado voters will, for once, have real choices for every federal office, presidency to U.S. House.”

Lamborn has represented the 5th Congressional District since 2007. Last November, he received 57% of the vote against Democratic challenger Stephany Rose Spaulding and Douglas Randall. Spaulding has announced her plan to run for U.S. Senate next year.

Keltie served 21 years in the military and is the mother of two who served, as well. She is an information technology professional.

She pledged to support First and Second Amendment rights, as well as education, healthcare, veterans and immigration. Like Hammons, she cited a “common sense” approach,

“I believe in exercising common sense on our Bill of Rights, education, healthcare and veterans,” she said in a statement. “And I’m convinced that the Unity Party will connect all Americans, both left and right.

She said the 5th Congressional District had been drawn so that “Democrats can’t mount a credible challenge to an incumbent who just doesn’t seem to get it that his district’s voters matter, and I look forward to making a credible challenge to the two-party system in 2020 and well beyond.”
