Sometimes, it’s shocking how long it takes a really bad idea to die. That’s the case with a proposal to set up a Colorado facility where people who want to use opioids or other drugs could shoot up under medical supervision.

During the Colorado Legislature’s last session, a similar idea to create a so-called “supervised use facility,” or “supervised injection site,” died in committee. Yet like a Halloween ghost, it’s been resurrected by a Denver city councilman.

Councilman Albus Brooks has asked his colleagues to approve an ordinance that would allow the city to set up such a facility, provided it’s approved by state lawmakers. The idea is to give drug addicts access to clean needles to prevent infection and access to medical personnel who could help prevent overdoses and other drug-related health problems.
